HL 22 Lexicon Short Film - Please complete this work by the end of class time on Tuesday, May 9.5/1/2017
Dear Botanist,
Please select a short film from this website. Look for one that no one else has selected! In your post: Connect - the content to our botany studies (all year!) Extend - your thinking to analyze the art form and the content. Why did they choose to tell the story in the way they did? Make specific references. Challenge - What would you do differently, add or subtract to make the message more clear and compelling to high school students? Dear Botanists,
As we work on our vegetable garden designs and succulent gardens in class, your home learning will focus on larger related environmental issues. This week's article is from Fine Gardening magazine and is about biocontrols and beneficial insects. Be sure to click on the green ALL so you don't miss any of the pages and pictures. Please respond in your post with an EXTEND, CHALLENGE, CONNECT (Notice how I messed with the order.) 1 EXTEND - what new knowledge did you gain from this web page? I would suggest a series of bullet points or a summary paragraph. 2 CHALLENGE - what other social/economic/environmental issues add challenges to collaborating with beneficial insects? 3 CONNECT - how does the information in this talk connect to and/or inform our study of garden design? Thank you! Dear Botanists,
As we work on our vegetable garden designs and succulent gardens in class, your home learning will focus on larger related environmental issues. This week's article is from Harvard Medical School and it is about processed foods. Please respond in your post with an EXTEND, CHALLENGE, CONNECT (Notice how I messed with the order.) 1 EXTEND - what new knowledge did you gain from this web page? I would suggest a series of bullet points or a summary paragraph. 2 CHALLENGE - what other social/economic/environmental issues add challenges to our choices of whole or processed foods? 3 CONNECT - how does the information in this talk connect to and/or inform our study of garden design? Thank you! Dear Botanists,
As we work on our vegetable garden designs and succulent gardens in class, your home learning will focus on larger related environmental issues. The first of these is the bee story. This TED Talk is a few years old, but still accurate in substance - though the numbers have gotten worse - and provides you with background knowledge. Please respond in your post with an EXTEND, CHALLENGE, CONNECT (Notice how I messed with the order.) 1 EXTEND - what new knowledge did you gain from this TED Talk? I would suggest a series of bullet points or a summary paragraph. 2 CHALLENGE - what other social/economic/environmental issues add challenges to the plight of bees and the gardens they pollinate? 3 CONNECT - how does the information in this talk connect to and/or inform our study of garden design? Again, you have two weeks to complete this work. You will need the background knowledge for class on Tuesday, April 4. Late work will not be accepted. Hello Botanists!
Our next unit of study after propagation is vegetable garden planning. To prepare for this, your home learning assignments will involve practice with the online software that we will use for our project. START! Go to plangarden.com and sign up for a 45 day free trial account. Don't worry - we do this every botany year and they don't pester you or charge you. All you need to sign up is a valid email address. Sign up, sign in, and bookmark the site. I don't know your password and can't help you if you forget. Record your sign in name and password somewhere safe and easily accessible. On the left hand side navigation panel, go to Products - then Tutorials and watch the Quick Tour, Layout Plot, Manage Veggies, and Pan/Select videos - about 20 minutes. This should give you a sense of how the software works and what information you will need before designing. Next week in class we will select specific varietals and design types. Your goal for right now is to learn the software. Also on the left you will find 'Know When to Plant'. Select a veggie that NO ONE ELSE HAS (check other student posts) and in your post include: the name of the veggie, the date to start indoors (when you signed up and put in your zip code - the program will choose the correct frost dates) and when to start or transplant outdoors. That's all for now! Check out my example. Dear Botanists, |
